The cabinet most laboratories actually need

Class II Type A2 Biosafety Cabinets

WSHLab’s Type A2 Biosafety Cabinet range provides personnel, product and environmental protection for routine laboratory work. Each Class II Type A2 BSC recirculates 70% of HEPA-filtered air and exhausts 30%. Available in 3–6 ft sizes with three airflow monitoring configurations, the range requires no dedicated exhaust ducting for standard biological applications.

TECHNICAL DATA

Type A2 airflow architecture

A single EC blower drives air through the supply ULPA filter into the work zone. The plenum is held under negative pressure, so a seal failure moves room air inward rather than contaminated air outward.

PERFORMANCE & SELECTION

How the airflow works

Room air enters through the front grille and the sash opening, splits into downflow and inflow, and the mixed air passes through the supply filter. Thirty per cent is pushed out through the exhaust filter; the rest returns to the work zone.

  • Downflow 0.33 ± 0.025 m/s, inflow 0.53 ± 0.025 m/s
  • 70% recirculated through the supply ULPA filter
  • 30% exhausted through the exhaust ULPA filter into the room
  • Negative pressure plenum between the two filters

CONFIGURATION & COMPATIBILITY

When A2 stops being the right choice

The recirculation ratio is the constraint. Anything that evaporates in the work zone will be carried back over your sample and into the room.

  • Volatile toxic chemicals — use Type B1 or B2
  • Cytotoxic drug preparation — use Type B2
  • Radionuclides — use Type B2
  • Large-volume solvent work — use Type B2

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Class II Type A2 Biosafety Cabinets: frequently asked questions

The questions buyers ask most often when specifying Class II Type A2 Biosafety Cabinets, answered by our technical team.

Does a Type A2 cabinet need to be ducted?

No. The 30% exhaust passes through a ULPA filter and returns to the room, so no duct connection is required. Some facilities choose to canopy-duct the exhaust for heat load reasons, but it is not a containment requirement.

Can I use a Type A2 cabinet for hazardous drugs?

No. USP 800 requires external exhaust with no recirculation for hazardous drug compounding. Use a Type B2 total exhaust cabinet instead.

What width do I need for two operators?

A 6 ft (1.8 m) cabinet gives two operators a comfortable working width with a 12 in sash opening. A 4 ft cabinet is comfortable for one operator and is the most common choice for cell culture.
