APPLICATIONS

Shaking Incubators & Incubator Shakers Applications & Use Cases

Application-led selection for real laboratory workflows.

Single tier, stacked or CO2 controlled

A benchtop shaker is a single chamber. A stacked tower puts two or three independent chambers on one footprint, each with its own temperature and shaking. A CO2 shaker adds gas control for cell culture in suspension, which is a different procurement decision from an environmental shaker.

Heat, humidity and condensation

Shaking generates heat and evaporates media. A refrigerated shaker must remove the motor heat as well as the room heat, and a humidified chamber must not drip onto the platform. Condensate management and door heating decide whether a long run finishes without a wet chamber.

PERFORMANCE & SELECTION

Orbit and speed are a pair, not a ranking

A 19 mm orbit at 300 rpm and a 50 mm orbit at 150 rpm are different mixing regimes. Small orbits suit microplates and 50 mL tubes; large orbits move viscous cultures and larger volumes. Quoting rpm without the orbit diameter tells you nothing about the oxygen transfer you will get.

  • Match orbit to vessel size: 19–26 mm for tubes and plates, 50 mm for larger flasks
  • Check that the speed range covers the low end you need for shear-sensitive cells
  • Confirm the speed accuracy and whether the platform is balanced at high speed
Orbit and speed are a pair, not a ranking
CONFIGURATION & COMPATIBILITY

The platform and the clamps carry the load

A shaking incubator is only as useful as its clamping. Universal platforms with adjustable bars accept many vessels but rattle at high speed; dedicated clamps hold firmly but only for one flask size. The rated load includes the clamps, not just the vessels.

  • List the flask and tube sizes you actually run and ask which clamps cover them
  • Check the rated platform load with clamps fitted
  • Plan a spare platform if two vessel types are used regularly
The platform and the clamps carry the load
