APPLICATIONS

CO2 & Multigas Incubators Applications & Use Cases

Application-led selection for real laboratory workflows.

Sterilisation: 180 °C dry heat, UV or humid cycle

A 180 °C dry-heat cycle sterilises chamber surfaces without removing shelves or sensors; a UV lamp only treats the air and exposed surfaces while it runs; a 90 °C humid cycle is a decontamination step. These are not equivalent, and the cycle length decides how long the chamber is out of service.

Humidity, stacking and the room

A water pan recovers humidity slowly and is a contamination harbour; an active humidity system recovers in minutes but adds a reservoir to maintain. Stacking two chambers doubles capacity on one footprint, but the upper unit must remain serviceable and the gas supply must reach both.

PERFORMANCE & SELECTION

Who needs CO2 control and who needs O2 as well

Adherent and suspension cell culture needs 5 % CO2 buffered against bicarbonate media. Work at physiological oxygen — stem cells, organoids, hypoxia studies — needs O2 control down to 1 %, which a tri-gas unit provides and a CO2-only cabinet cannot.

  • CO2-only for routine culture at ambient oxygen
  • Tri-gas for hypoxia, stem cells and organoid work
  • Confirm whether O2 control is factory-fitted or a field upgrade

CONFIGURATION & COMPATIBILITY

The sensor decides the recovery behaviour

An IR sensor reads CO2 directly and does not drift with humidity or temperature; a thermal conductivity sensor infers CO2 from a mixed signal and needs recalibration when setpoints change. The difference shows up as recovery time after a door opening and as drift between services.

  • Ask which sensor technology is fitted and whether it survives the sterilisation cycle
  • Compare CO2 recovery time after a 30 s door opening
  • Check the calibration interval and whether a certified gas is required
The sensor decides the recovery behaviour
