APPLICATIONS

Insect Rearing & Application Incubators Applications & Use Cases

Application-led selection for real laboratory workflows.

Humidity, vials and condensation

Rearing vials dry out in a dry chamber and mould in an over-humid one. A humidity-controlled cabinet or a humidity tray keeps the balance; condensate dripping onto vials is the usual failure mode.

Containment and cleaning between stocks

Escaping flies contaminate neighbouring stocks and a shared cabinet spreads mites. Gaskets, shelf removal and a cleanable interior matter more than raw volume, and a cabinet that is easy to empty gets cleaned more often.

PERFORMANCE & SELECTION

What a rearing cabinet has to hold

A Drosophila stock sits at 18 °C to slow the life cycle, a working cross at 25 °C, and both need a stable light schedule. The cabinet must hold a narrow band at a temperature close to ambient, which is a different load case from incubating at 37 °C.

  • 18 °C for stock maintenance, 25 °C for rapid cycling
  • A 12:12 light cycle with a reliable timer
  • Humidity high enough to stop vials drying out

CONFIGURATION & COMPATIBILITY

Photoperiod programming and the dark period

The light schedule must survive a power interruption and must not drift. Some controllers offer dawn and dusk ramps, which matter for behavioural work but not for stock keeping. During the dark period the chamber still has to hold temperature without the lamps as a heat source.

  • Check the real-time clock backup and the number of program steps
  • Confirm the temperature band with the lamps off
  • Ask whether light and temperature programs can be set independently
