Photostability Chambers

ICH Q1B asks for a specific dose, not for a bright box: at least 1.2 million lux hours of visible light and at least 200 W·h/m² of near-UV, delivered to the sample surface. A chamber that cannot measure the dose at the sample plane cannot demonstrate compliance, whatever its lamp wattage. This family covers the two accepted routes, fluorescent D65 plus UV-A, and xenon arc.

APPLICATIONS

Photostability Chambers Applications & Use Cases

Application-led selection for real laboratory workflows.

Temperature control during irradiation

Lamps heat the chamber, and a photostability study that exceeds its temperature tolerance is not a photostability study.

What to put in the quotation

Photostability projects go wrong on accessories far more often than on the chamber.

PERFORMANCE & SELECTION

Option 1 or option 2

The two options in ICH Q1B are different instruments, and mixing them up invalidates the study design.

  • Option 1 uses a single xenon arc lamp with filters that approximate daylight behind window glass, D65.
  • Option 2 uses two light sources, a fluorescent D65 bank for visible light and a UV-A bank for 320–400 nm.
  • Option 2 is easier to temperature-control because fluorescent lamps add little heat to the chamber.
  • Option 1 gives a closer spectral match to sunlight and is preferred where the product is light-sensitive across the visible band.
Option 1 or option 2
CONFIGURATION & COMPATIBILITY

The dose is the deliverable

Lux hours and W·h/m² are accumulated quantities, so the chamber has to integrate them and stop at the target.

  • A 8,000 lux source needs about 150 hours to reach 1.2 million lux hours, which is six days of continuous running.
  • The UV dose accumulates separately and needs its own sensor in the 320–400 nm band.
  • The sensor has to sit at the sample plane, not at the chamber wall, or the reading is optimistic.
  • Calibration of the irradiance sensor every 500 hours is the practice that keeps the study defensible.
