Chemical fume hoods for every laboratory — ducted, ductless, benchtop and floor-standing

Fume Hoods

WSHLAB produces the full selection of fume cupboards: ducted fume hoods that vent outdoors, duct-free filtered fume hoods, countertop units, and floor-mounted walk-in cabinets. Each chemical fume hood operates at a face velocity that enables it to manage hazards while keeping the airflow steady when the vertical sash opens. The units are constructed from 1.0mm cold-rolled steel for all-purpose work, polypropylene for the acids, and stainless steel for both clean and corrosive jobs, in sizes 1200, 1500 and 1800mm. All hoods are material-tested in accordance with ASHRAE 110 and SEFA 1 standards, with availability of VAV (variable air volume) option.

TECHNICAL DATA

Engineering the WSHLAB fume hood platform

Three material families share a similar aerodynamic configuration in the form of a three-part baffle with a design that spans the floor, workspace, and ceiling; the airfoil sill prevents a decrease in face-velocity at the edge of the bench; and the rear plenum balances exhaust flow over entire width of the unit. All-steel bodies are constructed of 1.0mm cold-rolled steel and protected with epoxy powder coating and a 5mm anti-hang-up lining; PP bodies are made from impervious 5-8mm polypropylene; Stainless bodies comprise 201/304/316 SUS steel with 304 grade steel interior. The sash is made from 5mm tempered glass with counter weight and synchronized belt drive; the lighting system incorporates bright LED lights.

Applications

Where laboratory fume hoods work

Chemical capture across every discipline of the modern laboratory.

Quality control — titrations, dissolution and wet-chemistry benches with point-source exhaust

Pharmaceutical R&D — weighing and dispensing of active powders in filtered enclosures

Teaching laboratories — demonstration hoods with full visibility and sash protection

Industrial and materials labs — corrosion testing and surface prep in floor-standing hoods

PERFORMANCE & SELECTION

What is a fume hood?

A fume hood refers to a ventilated structure that keep the operator safe and healthy by flowing air through its open face for capturing any offending substances inside the enclosure and expelling them outside using ductwork (called a ducted fume head) or filtering the air using HEPA filters and carbon and returning it back into the room (known as a ductless or filtered fume hood). The important features of a fume hood are containment, which means measuring the face velocity of 0.4-0.6 m/s at sash opening, uniformity of flow without spilling off any contaminants outside, and recovery of effective containment even when the sash is opened.

  • Ducted fume hoods exhaust contaminants outdoors through ductwork
  • Ductless filtered fume hoods recirculate purified air — no ductwork needed
  • Face velocity 0.4-0.6 m/s with containment verified per ASHRAE 110
  • Tempered glass vertical sash with LED lighting on every model

CONFIGURATION & COMPATIBILITY

Types of fume hoods

There are two ways of categorizing the hoods. By airflow, there are ducted hoods to remove large amounts of fumes and hazardous chemicals from the laboratory, or ductless hoods which can simply filter the fumes from normal processes and can be used when there is no duct installation possible. By the design of hoods, there are: benchtop fume hoods that can be placed on a workbench or a support cabinet; upright fume hoods, which can be installed on the floor; wide fume hoods for those applications when large equipment is utilized and the last one - sliding sash fume hoods that have a vertical lifting glass hood.

  • Ducted fume hoods — the default for heavy and hazardous chemical work
  • Ductless (filtered) fume hoods — carbon and HEPA filtration, no ductwork
  • Benchtop fume hoods — 1200/1500/1800mm on the bench or base cabinet
  • Floor-standing and walk-in hoods for tall apparatus and drum-scale work

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Fume Hoods: frequently asked questions

The questions buyers ask most often when specifying Fume Hoods, answered by our technical team.

Ducted or ductless — which do I need?

In fact, both types of hoods are available for a variety of applications. Ducted hoods are designed for high-volume and hazardous operations whereas ductless hoods filter through carbon and HEPA filters and are best used in low-volume situations where ducts aren't a viable option. Provide us with a list of chemicals used in your operation so that we can provide the best qualifications.

What materials are the hoods made from?

All materials used in construction are either all-steel (1.0mm cold-rolled steel, covered with epoxy) or polypropylene (5-8mm thick and acid-resistant) or stainless steel (examples include 304/201/316 with brushed finish). The liner is made of similar material: either anti-bet board, polypropylene or 304 stainless.

What widths are available?

Ducted hood measurements are available in three sizes: 1200mm, 1500mm and 1800mm (which correspond to 4-foot, 5-foot and 6-foot fume hoods) and come in both bench and floorstanding models.

Are the hoods ASHRAE 110 tested?

Yes, the containment and face velocity have been verified in accordance with ASHRAE 110. Moreover, the construction of the hoods complies with SEFA 1 and EN 14175 so that documentation is available for the European market.
