BOD5 testing — 20°C five-day incubation for wastewater compliance
±0.5°C uniformity, USB export
Some samples need it colder than the room. A BOD incubator — what many labs call a biochemistry incubator or refrigerated incubator — combines a heating circuit with a compressor cooling circuit, so it holds any setpoint from 5°C to 60°C regardless of what the ambient temperature is doing. That is the entire point: BOD5 bottles at 20°C, bacterial culture at 30°C, and enumerations at 35°C all hold steady through summer. WSHLab SPX biochemistry incubators pair an inverter compressor — low noise and frost-free — with a 304 stainless chamber and a double door: an outer door that seals, and an inner glass door that lets you check the load without dropping the chamber temperature. The touchscreen programmer stores 100 segments of temperature profiles in fixed or program mode, and every run exports to USB as CSV or PDF. Four chamber sizes, 80L to 400L, cover a single BOD5 bench workload to a full water-quality laboratory with dozens of bottles in simultaneous incubation. If your protocol also needs controlled humidity, ask about the MJ mould incubator; if it never goes below ambient, the DHP thermostatic incubator is the simpler machine.
An inverter compressor and a heating circuit share one 304 stainless chamber, managed by a touchscreen controller that stores 100 program segments and logs the run to USB. The double door keeps the inner glass sealed while the outer door is open, so inspections do not cost the whole chamber its stability.

A BOD incubator is a refrigerated incubator built to hold the 20°C ±1°C environment that the BOD5 test requires — days-long incubation of water samples while bacteria consume the dissolved organics. Because samples sit at or below room temperature, it needs active cooling, not just heating. The same machine doubles as a biochemistry incubator: any constant or programmed temperature between 5°C and 60°C for bacterial culture, mycology prep, enzyme reactions and shelf studies.
If your setpoints never dip below ambient, a heated-only incubator — like the DHP electric thermostatic incubator — is simpler and cheaper to run. The moment a protocol calls for 20°C BOD5 bottles in a 26°C lab, or 4–8°C storage-adjacent work, you need compressor cooling. A cooled incubator holds low setpoints against a warm room, and it also shrugs off ambient swings that would shift a heated-only box.

Five-day tests need defensible records — the SPX writes them for you.
Every SPX runs a multi-day hold at 20°C and a pull-down test before shipping — the two numbers a BOD lab depends on.

A refrigerated incubator needs what any compressor appliance needs: level ground, ventilation clearance and a stable power circuit.

The questions buyers ask most often when specifying BOD / Biochemistry Incubators, answered by our technical team.
5–60°C with heating and compressor cooling in one chamber. Fluctuation is ±0.5°C and resolution 0.1°C, so both BOD5 conditions at 20°C and bacterial culture at 35°C hold steadily.
Refrigerated — an inverter compressor cools below ambient, frost-free and low-noise. If you only incubate above room temperature, the DHP heated-only thermostatic incubator is a simpler choice.
80L, 150L, 250L and 400L. All four share the touchscreen programmer, 304 stainless interior and double-door glass window; larger chambers add shelf count for bottle racks.
Optional on the SPX. If precise 40–95% RH control is central to your protocol — for example fungal culture — the MJ mould incubator controls both variables as standard.
Touchscreen standard on every SPX: 100-segment programming, fixed and program modes, real-time curves and USB CSV/PDF export. A digital LED version is available for budget installations.
Tell us your bottle or flask count and your setpoints — we will size the right SPX chamber, quote it with the humidity option if you need it, and include a commissioning verification plan.
