Temperature and humidity controlled mould incubators for mycology

Mould Incubators

Fungi do not just want warmth — most moulds want a humid surface to sporulate on. A mould incubator therefore controls two variables at once: temperature for growth rate, and relative humidity for the culture surface. Run a plate at 60% RH instead of 90% and a fungal enumeration can undercount by half. That is why a mycology lab cannot borrow the bacteriology incubator. WSHLab MJ mould incubators hold 5–60°C and 40–95% RH in the same chamber, with refrigeration so the low setpoints survive a warm afternoon. A UV-C sterilization lamp decontaminates the chamber between runs, the touchscreen stores 100 program segments for day/night cycles, and every run exports to USB. The 304 stainless interior with rounded corners wipes down between species — important when one spore cross-contaminates a week of plates. Three chamber sizes — 100L, 250L and 400L — cover a single mycology bench to a food or pharmaceutical microbiology lab running fungal limits testing on production samples.

TECHNICAL DATA

MJ mould incubator architecture

One controller manages refrigeration, heating and active humidification together — because a 25°C/90% RH condition is one state, not two independent setpoints. The UV-C lamp, removable shelves and rounded stainless corners exist so the chamber resets cleanly between species.

PERFORMANCE & SELECTION

What is a mould incubator?

A mould incubator — sometimes called a fungal incubator or mycological incubator — is a chamber that controls temperature and relative humidity together, providing the humid, warm conditions fungi need to grow, sporulate and become countable on plate or membrane. Standard mycology conditions such as 25°C / 90% RH for yeast and mould enumeration, or 30°C / 80% RH for environmental isolates, hold steadily because the humidification and refrigeration systems are designed as one loop, not bolted on.

  • Temperature 5–60°C and humidity 40–95% RH controlled simultaneously
  • Compressor refrigeration for sub-ambient mycology conditions
  • UV-C sterilization lamp for decontamination between species
  • Touchscreen programmer: 100 segments, fixed and program modes, USB export
  • 304 stainless interior, rounded corners, removable shelves

CONFIGURATION & COMPATIBILITY

Why humidity control matters for fungal culture

Bacteria grow happily on moist agar regardless of the air around it. Fungi respond to the air itself: relative humidity drives sporulation, colony morphology and, on enumeration plates, whether a colony ever becomes visible. A humidified incubator holds the surface water activity where the method expects it. WSHLab humidifies with a controlled water circuit rather than a passive dish, so a 95% RH setpoint stays 95% RH — not 'wet on Monday, dry by Friday'.

  • Sporulation and colony visibility both depend on surface humidity
  • Standard methods specify RH as well as temperature — both must hold
  • Active humidification to 95% RH with closed-loop control
  • Condensation management keeps plate lids readable over multi-day runs

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Mould Incubators: frequently asked questions

The questions buyers ask most often when specifying Mould Incubators, answered by our technical team.

What temperature and humidity range does the MJ mould incubator control?

Temperature 5–60°C with compressor refrigeration, and relative humidity 40–95% RH. Typical mycology setpoints — 25°C/90% RH for yeast and mould, 30°C/80% RH for environmental isolates — hold automatically.

Does it include UV sterilization?

Yes — a UV-C lamp is standard, running on a programmable decontamination cycle between runs. Shelves and humidification components also remove for separate sterilisation.

What sizes are available?

100L, 250L and 400L. All three share the touchscreen 100-segment programmer, UV-C lamp, double-door glass window and 304 stainless interior.

How is humidity generated and controlled?

An active humidification circuit with closed-loop RH control — not a passive water dish. The controller holds the setpoint across multi-day runs and displays live humidity on the touchscreen.

Can it run bacterial culture protocols too?

Yes. The temperature range covers routine bacteriology, and the humidity can be set low or ignored for bacterial plates. Many labs run the MJ as their general microbiological incubator and keep a separate BOD incubator for refrigerated-only work.
