Chemical fume hoods engineered to exhaust hazardous vapours outdoors

Ducted Fume Hoods

A ducted fume hood is the workhorse of chemical safety: room air sweeps across the open sash face, captures the vapours, aerosols and dust generated inside the chamber, and the exhaust fan carries them through ductwork to a stack or scrubber outdoors. Nothing recirculates, nothing accumulates — the contaminant load leaves the building, which is why ducted hoods remain the default for serious chemistry. WSHLAB ducted hoods cover the full material matrix. General purpose chemical fume hood work runs in 1.0mm cold-rolled all-steel with a 5mm anti-bet liner. Concentrated acid digestion and perchloric acid work runs in welded 5-8mm polypropylene — no metal in the airstream at all. Clean, food and corrosive service runs in brushed 304 stainless. Each in 1200, 1500 and 1800mm widths, with exhaust volumes from 1036 to 1843 m³/h scaled to the width, and a vertical tempered glass sash over a three-section baffle. Every ducted hood is face-velocity mapped at multiple sash heights before it ships. Tell us the chemicals, the duct run and the fan position, and we will quote the hood with the correct exhaust volume and the duct spigot to match.

TECHNICAL DATA

Engineering the ducted hood series

The chamber aerodynamics define the series: an airfoil sill, a three-section rear baffle and a balanced exhaust plenum hold a uniform 0.4-0.6 m/s face velocity whether the sash is at the working height or full open. The sash runs on a synchronous belt counterweight system — smooth, single-hand operable, and lockable. Lighting is high-brightness LED behind a vapor-tight lens; service panels come off without tools, and the electrical system carries a LCD control panel with 10A splash-proof sockets.

Applications

Where ducted fume hoods work

Chemical capture wherever the contaminant must leave the building.

Perchloric acid work — PP construction with washdown-ready surfaces

Solvent distillation — all-steel hoods with condenser access

Industrial QC — corrosion and surface prep in floor-standing hoods

Teaching labs — demonstration chemistry with full sash protection

PERFORMANCE & SELECTION

What is a ducted fume hood?

A ducted fume hood — the classic chemical fume hood or fume cupboard — is a ventilated enclosure whose exhaust duct carries captured contaminants out of the building. A remote fan (roof-mounted or inline) pulls air through the chamber at a controlled face velocity, through the baffle and plenum, up the duct and out. Because nothing recirculates, a ducted hood tolerates high chemical loads, heat, and compounds that no filter reliably adsorbs.

  • All captured contaminant is exhausted outdoors — nothing recirculates
  • Face velocity 0.4-0.6 m/s held across the sash opening
  • Three-section baffle sweeps floor, work zone and ceiling
  • Exhaust fan, ductwork and stack sized to the hood width

CONFIGURATION & COMPATIBILITY

Materials: all-steel, PP and stainless steel

The chemistry inside decides the material. All-steel hoods (1.0mm cold-rolled, epoxy powder coated, 5mm anti-bet liner and baffle) are the general purpose fume hood standard — durable, economical, endlessly reconfigurable. PP hoods (5-8mm welded polypropylene body, liner and baffle) put no metal in the airstream and shrug off concentrated acids and alkalis. Stainless hoods (201/304/316 brushed body, 304 interior) are the choice for cleanrooms, food labs and corrosive service that steel coating cannot survive.

  • All-steel: general purpose solvent and reagent chemistry
  • PP: acid digestion, perchloric acid, wet chemistry
  • Stainless steel: cleanroom, food, and clean corrosive work
  • Anti-bet, PP or 304 liners with matching three-section baffles
Materials: all-steel, PP and stainless steel

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ducted Fume Hoods: frequently asked questions

The questions buyers ask most often when specifying Ducted Fume Hoods, answered by our technical team.

What materials are available?

All-steel (1.0mm cold-rolled, anti-bet liner), polypropylene PP (5-8mm welded) and stainless steel 201/304/316 — each in 1200, 1500 and 1800mm widths.

Benchtop or floor-standing?

Both. Benchtop hoods mount on the bench or a base cabinet for reagent-scale work; floor-standing hoods carry tall apparatus and larger processes with the same sash and liner hardware.

What exhaust volume does the hood need?

1036 m³/h at 1200mm, 1360 m³/h at 1500mm, 1684 m³/h at 1800mm for all-steel and PP (stainless: 1065/1397/1729). We publish the numbers so your fan and duct are engineered, not guessed.

Is it ASHRAE 110 tested?

Yes — every hood is face-velocity mapped at multiple sash heights to the ASHRAE 110 method before shipping, and construction follows SEFA 1 with EN 14175 documentation available.
